The union is made up of former domestic basketball players and aims
at, among others, promoting the sport and fostering better relations
among stakeholders of the game.
TBV was set to hold election in the city yesterday, as noted by its outgoing chairman, Martin Kemwaga.
The election, he revealed, abides by the body’s constitution, which
demands that every leadership should be in power for one tenure of
three consecutive years.
The body’s incumbent leadership had chairman, Kemwaga,
vice-chairman, Stanley Milanzi, secretary general, Charles Gao and
assistant secretary, one Vincent.
Other officials included treasurer, Asha Idd, assistant treasurer,
Michael Mwita and members, Sudi Massomo, Adam Mwaipopo and Vicky Hauba.
The union’s members that are contesting for leadership and the
respective positions in brackets include chairman William Kakusa. Other
posts contested were vice-chairman, secretary general and assistant
secretary.
Other contestants are Titus Azimio and Isaac Nguga (treasurer),
Iggy Sebastian (assistant treasurer), Mpalle Makajira, Rehema Shaibu,
Mwadawa Mayola, Leah Mwamoto and Adam Mwaipopo (executive committee
members).
The union also held its second annual eneral meeting the same day
to discuss among other issues, the outgoing chairman’s report and
financial report to be presented by the assistant treasurer.
Kemwaga said TBV has had plenty of achievements including establishment of a five-year junior basketball training program.
“The program aims at imparting basketball skills to youngsters aged
between 12 and 16 in a bid to see to it that the latter feature for the
national team by the time they are aged between 17 and 21,” he said.
He said the program was officially launched in 2011 by the then
Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Emmanuel Nchimbi.
“The program has already been held in Dar es Salaam, Singida and
Tanga, in which over 300 youngsters have acquired training,” Kemwaga
said.
He said efforts will be made to see to it that the program is held in the rest of the regions across the country.
TBV, he noted, has also toured several regions including Morogoro,
Mtwara, Singida, Ruvuma and Tanga to motivate youngsters to take part in
basketball, besides from championing for revival of the sport in the
regions.
“TBV’s relationship with Zanzibar has helped to improve the image
of the former. TBV is also continuing to maintain its relationship with
other sports from different parts of the country.”
“It’s my hope these achievements will offer challenge to Tanzania
Basketball Federation (TBF) and the sport’s other stakeholders who have
formed their respective unions,” he said.
TBV, moreover, had toured neighbouring countries, Kenya and
Burundi, in 2013 and 2014 to establish relations with the latter’s
former basketball players and the tours, as disclosed by Kemwaga, were
hugely successful. Ends
