AZAM FC will need to come up with better
strategies in the second leg match of the CAF Confederation Cup’s second
round game against Esperance to realise progression into the next stage
of the tournament, the former’s assistant coach, Dennis Kitambi, has
said.
Azam coach Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza
Speedy
wingers, Ramadhan Singano and Farid Musa, scored quick-fire goals
midway through the second half to boost their team cruise to a 2-1
victory over the North Africa soccer, Esperance giants in the first leg
game at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
Kitambi said Azam had an impressive start to the game and had three good scoring opportunities but the team failed to exploit the chances.
“We again had several good chances during the first five minutes of the second half but we didn’t make the most of them. It’s good results for the team but we need to prepare well for the second leg match,” Kitambi said.
Azam strikers, John Bocco and Ivorian Kipre Tcheche, had a frustrating day as they failed to convert numerous chances that came their way in either half.
Azam will therefore need a draw of any margin in the return leg game to qualify for the next stage of the continental tournament.
Much as Azam had the last laugh in the first leg game, the team's performance proved plenty needs to be done if the team is to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.
Azam midfielders, Ivorian Wilfred Bolou and Rwandan, Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza, had trouble containing their Esperance counterparts, Hoiucine Ragued, Driss Mhirsi and Fousseny Coulibaly, in the first half as the latter comfortably stringed passes and created scoring opportunities for their strikers.
Esperance’s coach, Ammar Souayeh, admitted the game was tough and his team struggled to adapt to the Azam Complex’s artificial pitch.
Souayeh said the team had several scoring chances in the first half and made full use of one of them.
He said the second leg game will be equally difficult but remained confident that his team will emerge victorious and progress to the next stage of the tournament.
Esperance has been enjoying a fairly impressive spell at the domestic level, as the team is currently in the third position in Tunisia’s Ligue 1 with 51 points in 20 outings.
The country’s other soccer big guns, CS Sfaxien and Etoile du Sahel, are in the first and second positions, respectively, with 55 and 53 points.
Azam had qualified for the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup with a 7-3 aggregate win over South Africa’s Bidvest Wits in the first round, while Esperance saw off Renaissance of Chad with a 7-0 aggregate rout in the round.
